Shopify: how to build an online store that sells and shows up on Google

Glowing shopping bag representing an online store built on Shopify

Opening a Shopify store is easy; getting it to sell is another story. The difference lies in catalog structure, product page quality, speed, measurement and the connection to traffic channels like Google and Meta.

These are the pillars I apply when building a store so it's profitable from the start.

Why Shopify for your ecommerce

  • Launch speed: infrastructure, security and checkout already solved.
  • Scale: supports everything from a handful of products to enormous catalogs.
  • Ecosystem: thousands of apps and integrations with Google, Meta, logistics and CRM.
  • Proven checkout that usually converts well out of the box.
  • Full design customization with themes and your own code (Liquid) when you need it.

Catalog structure and navigation

Before uploading products, define the architecture: clear categories and collections, a simple menu and useful filters. A good structure helps customers find what they're looking for and helps Google understand your store. Use names people actually search for ("adult dog kibble," not internal names) and avoid creating too many levels.

Product pages that convert

  • Quality photos from several angles and in context of use.
  • Clear title with brand, product type and key attributes.
  • Useful description: benefits, specifications, how to use it and answers to frequent questions; don't copy the supplier's, because it creates duplicate content.
  • Price, availability and shipping visible.
  • Reviews and social proof.
  • Clear call to action and a buy button that's also visible on mobile.

Bulk upload and catalog order

If you have hundreds or thousands of products, you don't upload them one by one. Shopify lets you import by CSV and via API, and with automation you can upload, update prices and inventory, and publish in batches. What matters is cleaning the data beforehand: consistent titles, unique SKUs, categories, attributes and properly named images. An orderly catalog is also the foundation for your Shopping and Meta catalog campaigns.

SEO on Shopify

Shopify already includes good foundations, but you should take care of:

  • Unique titles and meta descriptions for every product and collection.
  • Content on collections (intro text and frequently asked questions), not just a list of products.
  • Clean URLs and the correct canonical URL (Shopify generates product paths inside collections that can duplicate content).
  • Alt text on images.
  • Product structured data (price, availability, reviews) for rich results.
  • A blog with guides and comparisons that attract informational searches.

More details in the SEO guide.

Speed: fewer apps, better code

Every app you install usually adds scripts that slow the store down. Install only the essentials, remove the ones you don't use (and their leftover code), compress images and choose a lightweight theme. A fast store converts more and ranks better. Custom theme development can achieve high PageSpeed scores without sacrificing design.

Payments, shipping and trust

Offer the payment methods your customers already use (cards, transfers, local gateways and cash or in-store payments depending on your market), set clear shipping rates and publish return, privacy and terms policies. Trust badges and reviews reduce checkout abandonment.

Connect the store to Google and Meta

  • Google Merchant Center to appear in Shopping and free listings.
  • Meta catalog for catalog campaigns and dynamic remarketing on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Pixel, Conversions API and GA4 configured from day one, with purchase value.

With that in place you can launch Google Ads campaigns and Meta Ads with reliable data.

Retention: the money is in repeat purchases

Winning a new customer costs more than selling again to an existing one. Set up abandoned cart, welcome and post-purchase emails, and consider WhatsApp as a repurchase channel. Measuring customer lifetime value (LTV) tells you how much you can invest to win a new one.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a Shopify store?

It depends on catalog size and the level of customization. A store with an adapted theme can be ready in a few weeks; one with custom design, integrations and thousands of products takes longer.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes, it has a solid technical foundation, but ranking depends on your work: good titles, content on collections and products, speed and quality links.

Can I upload thousands of products at once?

Yes. You can do it with CSV import, the Shopify API or automation, always starting from a clean, standardized catalog.

Do I need advertising to sell on Shopify?

Usually yes, at least at the beginning. Combining Google Ads, Meta Ads and SEO lets you capture existing demand and create new demand while you build organic traffic.
